Overview

As of April 2025, the total number of domain name registrations across all tracked Top-Level Domains (TLDs) reached 336,043,020. This represents a year-over-year growth rate of 1.99%. The domain base is split between generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) and country-code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs), accounting for 236,830,744 and 99,212,276 registrations respectively.

Growth Leaders

Several gTLDs experienced significant percentage growth in April. .loan led with a year-over-year increase of 1043.7%, reaching a total of 97,272 registrations. .xin followed with 607.6% growth, totaling 91,843 registrations, while .gdn saw a 510.3% increase, reaching 76,257 registrations. However, it’s important to note that these high percentage gains are from a relatively small base.

Looking at absolute gains, .xyz experienced the largest increase with 1,070,480 new registrations, reaching a total of 4,925,410. .top added 872,066 registrations, totaling 4,045,290, and .shop grew by 801,306 registrations, reaching 3,878,243. These represent the most substantial volume increases within the month.

Notable Declines

While overall growth was positive, some TLDs experienced declines. .cfd saw the most significant percentage decrease, falling by 63.8% to 397,813 registrations. .bio declined by 37.5% to 52,118 registrations, and .monster decreased by 32.5% to 54,302 registrations.

In terms of absolute losses, .com experienced a decrease of 1,972,384 registrations, despite remaining the largest TLD with 161,070,913 registrations overall. .net also saw a substantial decrease of 430,903 registrations, totaling 12,878,985.

Registrar Landscape

Across 1293 tracked registrars, a total of 191,206,674 domains were registered. GoDaddy remains the market leader, holding 30.5% market share with 58,271,437 registrations, but experienced a year-over-year decrease of 3.7% (-2,257,920 registrations). Namecheap showed the largest positive swing among major registrars, gaining 11.3% (1,305,947 registrations) to reach 12,877,526 registrations. Tucows (Enom/OpenSRS/Ascio/Hover) saw a decrease of 2.1% (-274,638 registrations), while Squarespace / Google increased by 3.6% (342,657 registrations).

Market Activity

Domain name activity in April 2025 indicates a healthy market. There were 6,518,816 new domain creations, 11,514,209 renewals, and 5,878,868 deletions. This resulted in a net addition of 639,948 domains. A total of 546,902 domains were transferred between registrars.

Country-Code Movers & Milestones

Among ccTLDs, .ai experienced the most significant growth, increasing by 69% to 598,007 registrations. .id grew by 34.4% to 1,222,900 registrations, and .us increased by 23% to 2,575,574 registrations. Conversely, .nu decreased by 7.5% to 213,467 registrations, and .ua decreased by 3.4% to 446,359 registrations.

No new TLDs were added this month. However, .store surpassed 2,000,000 registrations, reaching a total of 2,016,364.
